Islandora: An Open Source Institutional Repository Solution
In the summer of 2013, Southwest Minnesota State University and Minneapolis College of Art and Design joined PALS as development partners for the Islandora Digital Repository Project. Islandora uses common open source components such as Drupal, Apache, and SOLR to build a dynamic, robust, and customizable Institutional Repository. This session will include a demonstration of Islandora and a discussion of the project, challenges, lessons learned, and successes. There will also be time for questions and answers about Islandora and PALS’ Islandora services. PALS’ goal is to provide Islandora to Minnesota libraries and archives.

Marketing Library Services: From Posters to Platforms
No matter how visible your reference desk is, no matter how many information literacy session your librarians teach, no matter how many students come through your library doors each day, there is a need in all libraries for savvy, creative marketing campaigns. We can no longer rely on word-of-mouth to get the message out about what the library can do for students, faculty and staff. This presentation will examine the ups and downs of creating and, especially, maintaining several social media platforms. In this session I’ll show how you can use plain language, one of the main tenets of usability, to boost patron confidence. Holistic Tech: Harness Your Library's Data Fetish to Solve the Right Problems
Libraries have jumped on the User Experience bandwagon of late, rethinking our tools and services with a new focus on patron needs. But we still see things differently than our patrons. Where we see discrete services supporting our larger mission, patrons only see a confusing website. Where we test the usability of a single tool or service, patrons interact with multiple tools and services during one transaction.  Without a holistic view of the entire user experience, we spend our time solving the wrong problems. In this presentation, I will share our experiences at Grand Valley State University where we worked to break down “data silos” and improve our patrons’ overall experience.  Included will be practical tips for conducting tests of all kinds, and strategies for getting reluctant (or overworked!) colleagues on board.

Krueger Library Boot Camp: Get your App in Gear!
At Winona State University’s Darrell K. Krueger Library, a New Student Orientation activity using the SCVNGR app, a QR Reader app and Piktochart infographics was implemented during Fall 2013. The Krueger Library Boot Camp provided students with an opportunity to navigate the library’s physical space, and familiarize themselves with the library’s policies and services by completing a self-paced, self-guided app-based activity. Structuring Library Data on the Web with Schema.org: We're On It!

Until recently, there has been a disappointing level of adoption of schema.org structured data in traditional core library systems such as catalogues and institutional repositories. But there is still hope! In this session, l'll briefly (re)introduce you to the schema.org  vocabulary as expressed in microdata and RDFa and convince you that it matters to libraries, explain how our W3 Schema Bib Extend group participates in the schema.org development process, identify library systems that now publish schema.org structured data by default, and explore emerging possibilities for enhancing libraries' presence on the web with structured data.

The Challenges of Making Digital Research Data Accessible
Disseminating, archiving, preserving, and even curating the digital results of grant-funded research is a growing user need for academic institutions. The University of Minnesota Libraries are piloting data curation services using existing tools and infrastructure, including our well-established institutional repository. By developing common workflows for accession, ingest, description, access, and preservation of digital data assets, we hope to better understand the variety and scale of our users' data, big and small. Applying ʺMore Product, Less Processʺ to Digital Collections
In the years since Meissner and Greene published their seminal article, ʺMore Product, Less Processʺ (MPLP) has become widely used for archival processing.  It is not, however, used as frequently to create digital collections. For a digitization project to make the papers of past university presidents available online, the St. Catherine University Archives decided to apply MPLP principles. Using our project as a case study, attendees at this session will learn approaches for choosing between item-level and folder-level presentation and description when digitizing archival documents.. We will cover considerations including: choosing when to highlight single items, providing context for documents online, and being strategic when creating metadata.

Defence Against the Digital Dark Arts (Grade One)
Dark forces conspire online to undermine privacy, compromise accounts, stalk, troll, and creep us out. Libraries have a longstanding tradition of protecting their users’ privacy and confidentiality, but often fail to take basic steps to protect patrons using their public access computers. In this session you will learn how online surveillance works, what can be done to better safeguard public computers, and the basics of digital self defense. We will also discuss legal threats to our digital rights and the importance of being anonymous in an online surveillance state. Together we can put the patron back in Patronus.

iPad Labs: Ultimate Substitute or Colossal Headache?
Purchasing iPads to create a mobile, flexible classroom for any library type presents immediate advantages. Myriad teaching possibilities combined with the minimal physical infrastructure needed and excellent device battery life easily pegs an iPad lab as promising. Still, using an inherently personal device in the traditional library classroom environment does present significant challenges. Attendees will learn about the requirements to set up, administer and maintain a fleet of 30 iPads, potential roadblocks in the one shot classroom user experience, positives of iPads in this environment, and key points for any library looking at this route to consider.

Knowing Catalog Users Through Their Digital Footprints
Many libraries have ʺNext Generationʺ OPACs, featuring faceted search, relevancy-ranked results, favorites, etc. How are they being used? Usability tests and reference librarian feedback are necessary but insufficient when many of your users don't enter the library at all. In this session, the presenter will briefly address the challenges of implementing a modern OPAC, look at how we collect analytics, and then try to answer questions about how good our search results are, what features are used and which are ignored, and how librarian activity can skew the results even at an institution as large as the University of Michigan.

Mobile First: Ensuring Your Library is Future Ready
Mobile Web browsing is becoming increasingly pervasive, especially among younger Web users.  In order to keep up with the information needs of this age group, a growing number of libraries are creating mobile versions of their websites or creating mobile apps that provide ubiquitous access to some library services. Usability of mobile websites is crucial to ensure users have a positive experience with the site, increasing the likelihood that they will use it again in the future. This presentation will discuss the results of a comparative usability study of three academic library mobile websites. The results illustrate which design principles work well for mobile library sites and make them easiest to use.

Storytime with an iPad
Storytime using iPads?? How is this possible? Toward Bibliographic Web Services
Building upon new web services for the cataloging community, OCLC recently launched their WorldShare Metadata API, which allows individuals to write data to WorldCat within their own applications. John Chapman (WorldShare Metadata API Product Manager) will discuss how the WorldShare Metadata API works; allowing for a user to build into their own applications the ability to add new records to WorldCat, replace and enrich records, and manage WorldCat holdings. Chapman will also discuss where he sees the use of bibliographic web services evolving in the near future. Paul Swanson, Minitex, will discuss the application he developed to streamline the work of Minitex resource sharing staff. The application, Automatic ILL Request Verification, uses the WorldCat search API.

Appification of Information Literacy: Low Stakes, Big Rewards
Web Apps offer low stakes platforms for developing library lessons that are easily modified, shared, and made interactive.  I will discuss how I have used Storify, LucidChart, and Libguides to help students learn about conducting background research, evaluating sources, and determining and revising source needs.  These experiences supplement the university’s one-shot library lesson for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s required Blugold Seminar on Critical Reading and Writing.  The lessons are easily modified so that English Faculty teaching in the Blugold Seminar can adapt them to their individual sections.

The Flexibility of Google Tools (Sites, Docs, YouTube) for Teaching Data Information Literacy Concepts – From Online Instruction to the Flipped Classroom
In Fall 2012, the University of Minnesota Libraries launched an IMLS-funded online class to teach data information literacy skills. The online and asynchronous class was built mostly with Google Tools – Sites, YouTube, Docs. In Fall 2013, we repurposed much of the content to construct a “flipped classroom” series of workshops. This presentation will discuss our process of building and iterating content and discuss the strengths of Google Tools for creating flexible learning objects. We will also discuss the online and in-person instructional approaches to cover identical material and share our assessment results, completion rates, and student feedback for the two approaches.

The Learning Curve: College Students, Social Media, and Metaliteracy
St Cloud State University professors Rachel Wexelbaum and Plamen Miltenoff have developed a credit bearing course on social media and its research applications for undergraduates. Teaching the course has challenged existing knowledge of “digital natives” and their understanding of research, social media, technology, and global citizenship. Development and execution of the course has also brought to light the successes and challenges of co-teaching, and how a “traditional” librarian and technologist have discovered common pedagogical ground. In this session, we will facilitate a discussion to share experiences teaching students about social media and technology for research and collaborative learning.

Web Usability Before And After Resource Discovery
This session will discuss performing usability studies of library websites and Resource Discovery systems. The presentation will cover how the studies were conducted with a minimal budget and with almost no equipment.  The interaction between the search widget on the library home page for the Resource Discovery system, Primo will be discussed in the frame of the “one stop shop” model.  An analysis of the task completion rate for specific tasks will also be shared with the attendees.  A discussion of changes to the resource discovery interface to improve usability will be highlighted.   Suggestions for both conducting usability studies as well as areas for further research will be shared with the participants.

When Text Isn’t Enough: An Exploration into the World of Multimodal Scholarship in the Digital Arts, Sciences and Humanities
Increasingly, scholars are producing works in non-traditional genres and mediums, published using alternative platforms. This presentation will describe some of the trends and unique affordances of multimodal scholarship across the digital arts, sciences and humanities domains. Examples discussed include results from a recent bibliometric study on science video abstracts; Humanities dissertations, monographs, and edited collections published, and sometimes collaboratively written, online; and digital art scholarship, such as the Words of Encouragement installation (Weisman Art Museum). Finally, we will discuss the potential implications of these emerging areas of scholarship on librarians and library services.

Creating Anoka County Library on the Go

In 2012, the Anoka County Library received an LSTA grant to expand accessibility of both physical and digital library materials.  Titled, "Anoka County Library on the Go", this new service offers library patrons a variety of kiosk-based services to make access to library materials more easy and convenient including book vending machines, MediaSurfer iPad tablet dispensers, locker based book delivery services, and 3M Discovery Stations touchscreen kiosk that allow patrons to browse and checkout the library's collection of ebooks.  Attendees will learn how this service was implemented and lessons learned over the course of the grant period.

Forging information literacy skills with ANVIL: an innovative game-based approach to teaching information literacy
At the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, library staff developed a game-based tool to aid in the teaching of the concepts and skills associated with information literacy. Students watch a series of videos based on the ACRL standards for information literacy. After viewing the videos, students test their comprehension of a particular standard by playing a “bar-trivia” style game. Points are awarded for accuracy and speed, and scores are posted to a global leaderboard to promote friendly competition. This presentation will highlight the process behind game development, campus-wide implementation, and user and faculty response.

Information privacy is a cornerstone of library ethics. So why would we compromise that on library computers? Yet without our intervention, library patrons can have their behavior tracked when they use the web on our computers, or join our wireless Internet networks. Learn what we can (and, unfortunately, can't) do to protect patron privacy online. After a brief introduction to some of the significant threats to online privacy, this session will provide a swift tour of privacy- and security-protecting technologies, including wireless network encryption, privacy-positive web browser settings, anti-tracking web browser plugins, password managers and privacy-positive search engines and other online tools. Universal access: Engaging the complexity of web accessibility through Collaboration

Web accessibility is a growing concern for many libraries and higher education institutions. Temple University is currently undergoing a campus-wide effort to increase accessibility of web technologies for users with disabilities using guidelines modeled on Section 508 of the U.S. Workforce Rehabilitation Act and the WCAG 2.0 document released by the W3C for best practices in web accessibility. As part of this effort, the University Libraries is evaluating its information technologies to ensure that university web accessibility guidelines are met. Library public services and technology staff alike are faced with remediation of content and information systems.   This session will offer insights into the opportunities, obstacles, and options of applying web accessibility guidelines across a library’s vast web presence. Presenters will discuss general tools, standards, and guidelines for content remediation and the outcomes plus challenges. The session will highlight concrete strategies for educating and training staff on web accessibility, working collaboratively across library departments and units, and communicating with vendors.

SHOW & TELL SESSION: A Closer Look at Some of the 'Next Big Things'

New technologies are often referred to as 'game-changers' or as being 'disruptive'. We hear about these technologies but often do not have an opportunity to learn the details or interact with them.  This informal and highly interactive session is meant to provide this opportunity. 

We've all heard about it and have probably seen people wearing it - Google Glass.  But what is this technology? How do users interact with it?  What are possible practical uses for it?  Join us for a short conversation with Kate Agnew, managing director of Girls in Tech Minneapolis/St. Paul and someone who is among the early adopters working with Google to test this technology.  She will start off this session with a brief talk describing Google Glass and share her experiences.   Then we'll break into 'demonstration mode' where participants will have a chance to come up and try out and ask questions not only about Google Glass, but also other new technologies that are changing the way that we interact with technology.  Other technologies will include:

  • Oculus Rift - a virtual reality headset still in development.  Originally created for 3D gaming, it has been used by NASA to control robotics, by the Ford Motor Company to demo prototype cars, and in medicine for PTSD therapy.
  • LEAP Motion - a next-generation, gesture based, mouse-like device that senses how you naturally
    move your hands and lets you use your computer in a while new way.

Connecting the Clicks
A library user’s online experience is complex, moving between multiple systems, discovery layers, link resolvers, databases, and journal lists, not to mention Google, blogs, social media and the web itself.  A challenge for libraries is how they can improve our users' online library experience.  This session will cover collecting data on user behaviors and using a variety of tools (and some common sense) to implement fixes to better help users navigate our web sites.   Specifically, the presenter will talk about ways to collect data (analytics/event tracking, user testing, in-person transaction logging) and some ideas for fixes ranging from simple (contextual linking, links to popular items) to more complex (using API's from various vendors, creating auto-complete search boxes, jQuery helper widgets).

Life after Usability Testing: Finding the Path from Problem to Process Improvement
Once your library has completed usability testing, what’s next? Constraints on time can mean that employing changes driven by usability testing are repeatedly postponed. Librarians at Metropolitan State University became aware of usability issues with their Libguides subject guides. To address these concerns, a library intern worked with subject librarians and converted 51 subject guides using a new format. We will discuss practical steps you can take to develop a project plan and workflow in order to implement desired changes to your subject guides. These steps and strategies may also be applied to other web related projects at your library.

Perfection is Overrated: Google Apps as the UMN Libraries Intranet
This session describes the benefits and limitations of using Google Apps for Education to handle a large academic library's intranet. The University of Minnesota Libraries use Google Drive for document storage, Google Sites for web content and Google Groups to manage permissions for both Drive and Sites. Google Apps for Education integrates with any additional services that might still be in use, suits collaborative work patterns and may be implemented without additional resources. Flipping the Classroom: Applying Flipped Teaching Methods to Library Instruction
The flipped or inverted classroom is a teaching model that requires students to view presentations and lecture videos before class and then use class time to work on assignments and active problem solving. This session will discuss the experiences of librarians at the  University of St. Thomas Law Library and the University of South Dakota Libraries who have incorporated flipped classroom techniques into their library's  instruction program. During the session, the presenters will discuss preparing online lectures and other class materials for their flipped classroom, their student learning outcomes, and the benefits and drawbacks of using this particular teaching method. Following this presentation, participants will understand inverted instruction’s applicability to information literacy programs, appreciate its benefits for both students and librarians, and be able to apply inverted or flipped pedagogy to their own information literacy instruction.

Geocaching History Challenge: Using High-Tech Toys to Learn History

Do you love local history?  Do you love a good treasure hunt?  Do you love high-tech gadgets?  Put them together to get your library patrons out and about in your local area.  Learn how the Ramsey County Library teamed up with the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society to teach about local historic sites using geocaches in this Legacy-funded program.  Learn to play the high-tech game yourself using handheld GPS receivers or smartphones!  Participants will go outside for the last half of the session so be prepared for the weather.

Getting Library Data to Where It's Needed

Libraries collect, update, analyze, archive, display, share, and discuss internal data as they assess the services and resources that they provide to users.  This session will discuss two libraries' approaches to using and sharing internal data.  Concordia University St. Paul used Google Apps and Sites,  to build an internal site that tracks database usage and costs, student enrollment,  and user demographics. They also created a dashboard for managing and assessing student workers.   The University of Michigan built Datamart to give library staff an easy way for all staff to query the library system and generate spreadsheets. Datamart generates 50-60 reports each week, seamlessly getting data to where it can do the most good. The presenter will talk about creating the system, issues around transforming data from the ILS, and demonstrate the flexible query-building system and typical reports.

Infographic DIY: Online Tools for Teaching and Library Advocacy
The rising popularity and ubiquity of infographics is changing the way that people receive information. Thanks to new online tools, libraries can easily create their own professional-looking infographics with minimal time investment and cost. This presentation will provide an overview and comparison of six ‘freemium’ infographic creation platforms. The presenter will discuss best practices for infographic creation, based on the design literature, as well as provide suggestions for using infographics for library advocacy and as teaching tools in information literacy classes.

Redesign on a Dime: Building a Clean, User-friendly Library Web Site Using Home-grown and Free Tools

Loras College librarians transformed their library’s website into one that responded to users’ needs while meeting the library's teaching objectives and the College’s branding requirements - all with no budget, limited staff, and very little technical assistance.  After learning about how this ACRL College Library Web Site of the Month was created using quick-and-dirty usability testing, open source code, and vendor-provided and home-grown widgets, attendees will have the opportunity to explore free tools discussed in the presentation at hands-on stations, including WireframePro, Jing, and card sorts. Participants will gain a knowledge of free tools that can be applied to their own library’s website.

Using Freely Available Tools to Protect Your Digital Content

Managing digital content over time can be challenging as one has to protect against loss of data, format obsolescence, natural and man-made disasters. There are small steps you can take now to help ensure access to your digital content in the future.  If you want to determine that the files you are storing have not become corrupt, or be able to better track how much digital content you have and the file formats used, you may want to attend this hands-on lab.  Presenters will show you how to use some of the freely available tools out there to help you monitor the health of your digital files. Checksum tools that tell you if your files have changed over time at the bit level will be demonstrated like Exact File and Hash My Files, and more. You will have a chance to work with file duplicate detection tools as well as with DROID, which assists with file format identification, captures file property information, and displays information to you in a readable report.
